Affiliate Marketing on TikTok Beyond TikTok Shop

TikTok Shop is the obvious affiliate route because it is built in. It is also not the highest-paying one. Programmes outside the app often pay several times more per sale, at the cost of sending people through a link in your bio instead of an in-app checkout.

The trade-off, stated clearly

In-app purchases convert dramatically better because there is no friction. External links lose most of the traffic between the video and the checkout. So external affiliate programmes only make sense when the commission is large enough to survive that drop-off — which rules out cheap physical products and strongly favours software, services and expensive items.

Where the money is

Software and SaaS. The best-paying category by a distance. Many tools pay a recurring percentage for as long as the customer stays subscribed, which turns one video into income that continues for years. Editing tools, hosting, design apps, productivity software.

Online courses and education. High ticket prices mean meaningful commission per sale, and the audience overlap with how-to content is strong.

Financial products. Brokerages, budgeting apps and similar pay well per signup. Be careful here: financial promotion is regulated in most countries and the rules are stricter than general advertising.

Amazon Associates. Low percentages, but it converts on everything in the basket and people already trust the checkout. Works best for accounts recommending many small items.

Making external links work

You get one link in bio, so use a simple landing page listing your recommendations, organised by what the videos were about. Mention in the video exactly where to look — “second link down” — because viewers arriving at a page of twelve options mostly leave.

Avoid pasting raw affiliate links in comments; it looks like spam, performs badly, and some programmes prohibit it.

Disclosure is not optional

Advertising regulators in the UK, US, EU and elsewhere require clear disclosure of paid links, and so do the affiliate programmes themselves. Say it plainly in the video and in the caption. Creators who disclose consistently do not convert worse — audiences largely expect it and react badly only to concealment.

Picking programmes

Only promote what you use. This is partly ethics and mostly economics: an audience that buys one bad recommendation on your word stops buying anything on your word. The lifetime value of being trusted exceeds any single commission.

Check cookie duration too — how long after a click you still get credit. A 24-hour window on a considered purchase like software means you lose most of the sales you generated.

A sensible mix

TikTok Shop for cheap, demonstrable physical products where conversion matters most. External programmes for software and anything expensive, where the commission justifies the friction. Most creators who earn well from affiliate income run both.
